Why This Matters
The petition of certain citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the House the essential contributions of informal carers (both unpaid and those receiving income support), parents, and citizens receiving the Disability Support Pension (DSP).
These contributions provide immense economic and social value to the Australian community. However, the current rates of income support fall drastically short of the National Minimum Wage, forcing many into financial hardship.
Furthermore, these citizens face a double disadvantage: they are denied superannuation (leading to poverty in retirement), and their years of complex, practical caregiving experience are currently ignored by the formal labour market.
This lack of recognition creates a barrier for carers wishing to transition into the paid workforce.
